Our Local Offer.
Sunflowers is an inclusive setting, where possible we will make every effort to ensure that your child’s needs are met regardless of disability, health condition, developmental need – or even a temporary set back – such as a broken arm – we work with you to take the necessary steps towards inclusion.
Can we take care of your child?
Yes! – we aim to provide care for all children at Sunflowers. We acknowledge that sometimes children need specialist care – this might be down to an illness or condition, a special educational need, a physical need, an emotional need or a social need. As a well established and professional early years setting we are able to access support from specialist services and work together with them to provide holistic care for your child.
We will always try to meet your child’s needs and the needs of your family – if our setting isn’t appropriate we will work hard with you to find the right care for your child.
What experience do we have?
Our nursery is purpose built and was designed with easy access in mind. If either yourself or your child or a staff member has a physical disability, we are completely accessible – we have easy access ramps at the main entrance, wide accessible doors and a fully accessible toilet. Our outdoor play area is also easily accessible.
Our Nursery has been open since 2001. During this time we have had experience of providing care and education for children with many individual needs and of working with specialist services to provide additional care and support for children and families.
Staff use their highly effective teaching skills to provide exceptional learning opportunities that challenge and support all children, including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities, and those at risk of not achieving as well as their peers, to make the maximum progress possible. Ofsted July 2014.
We are happy to adapt our resources and train our staff where practical. Recently we have experience of or have accessed the following training for staff:
- Paediatric first aid
- Diabetes training and administration of insulin
- Epi Pen Training
- Cystic Fibrosis awareness
- Coeliac awareness
- Autism Training
- Sensory impairment inc visual impairment
- Partial & profound Hearing Loss
- Cerebral Palsy
What can we offer?
We can offer a personalised and professional service for your child and your family. We will genuinely try to adapt our practice to meet the needs of your child.
Usually our first step is to organise a home visit to meet your child, this is a service we wanted to offer families with children with additional needs in order to give us an overall view of your child and their needs whilst they are in an environment where they are comfortable. We will also organise some trial sessions where you can come to Sunflowers with your child – at this point we will assess the Nursery environment and look at any changes to the provision we may need to consider. These could be in terms of physical changes ( e.g the addition of grab rails), the addition of specialist resources, additional staffing or training. At all times we will communicate with you and involve you in all aspects of your child introduction to nursery.
We then find out who else is working with your child – (professionals such as Speech and Language Therapists, Portage Workers, Physiotherapists, dieticians or specialist Nurses), and contact them to work together with us to make a realistic care or play plan to ensure we are doing the best we can.
If you need to know anything else?
Please ring the nursery and arrange to come and look round and meet Heather our Nursery Manager or Teresa our Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO).
